New Research Confirms the Powerful Role of Acupuncture in Cancer Care

Acupuncture continues to gain recognition as an essential supportive therapy for people undergoing cancer treatment. New multi-center trials led by oncologist Dawn Hershman, MD, of Columbia University Medical Centre, reinforce what Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners have witnessed for decades: acupuncture can significantly reduce treatment-related pain and improve overall quality of life for women with breast cancer.
Aromatase inhibitors remain one of the most effective therapies for preventing recurrence in estrogen-driven breast cancer. Yet many women struggle with intense, arthritis-like joint pain that impacts sleep, mood, mobility, and daily comfort. Some even discontinue the medication because the discomfort becomes unmanageable. This is where acupuncture proves invaluable.
Acupuncture’s Measurable Impact on Pain from Cancer Treatment
In Hershman’s largest trial to date, 226 women across 11 cancer centers were assigned to one of three groups: true acupuncture, shallow needle insertion at non-acupuncture points (sham acupuncture), or no treatment. After six weeks, women receiving true acupuncture reported significantly lower pain scores compared to the control groups. Almost twice as many women in the true acupuncture group experienced a reduction of at least two points on the pain scale, which is considered clinically meaningful.
For oncology care, this matters. A reduction of even one point in worst pain levels often translates to improved adherence to medication, better sleep, increased mobility, and stronger emotional resilience.
From a TCM perspective, this makes complete sense. Aromatase inhibitors create patterns consistent with Kidney Yin deficiency, Liver Blood deficiency, and Qi and Blood stagnation, all of which can manifest as joint pain, stiffness, and emotional strain. By promoting smooth circulation of Qi and Blood, calming the Shen, and nourishing underlying deficiencies, acupuncture supports both symptom relief and overall vitality.
Why Acupuncture Works So Well for Cancer-Related Pain
Mainstream medical researchers now widely acknowledge that acupuncture modulates neurophysiology in ways that reduce pain, inflammation, and stress. Studies suggest that acupuncture influences:
Endorphin release
Serotonin and dopamine regulation
Neuroplasticity
Local microcirculation
Immune modulation
These mechanisms align seamlessly with TCM’s understanding of restoring harmony to the channels and organs affected by disease or medication.
Rollin Gallagher, MD, director of pain-policy research at the University of Pennsylvania, notes that acupuncture is proving effective in conditions ranging from neuropathy to fibromyalgia. This reinforces why cancer centers are increasingly integrating acupuncture into their treatment model.
Acupuncture Is Now Mainstream in Cancer Care
Nearly 90 percent of National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers recommend acupuncture to their patients. Over 70 percent offer it on-site. This shift helps patients access safe, regulated practitioners and reduces reliance on opioid medications.
At our clinic in Naples, FL and Nutley, NJ, we work closely with oncology patients to help manage:
Aromatase inhibitor joint pain
Chemotherapy-induced neuropathy
Fatigue
Anxiety and insomnia
Digestive changes
Hot flashes and night sweats
With TCM, supportive therapies always extend beyond the needles. During treatment, we often provide guidance on nutrition, gentle movement, acupressure, and lifestyle adjustments that can enhance comfort and recovery.
You do not have to navigate cancer treatment pain alone. Acupuncture can help.
If you or a loved one is experiencing pain or side effects during cancer treatment, we are here to support you. Schedule an acupuncture session today and experience how integrative care can restore comfort and improve quality of life.
